As drought and long-term pressure on the Colorado River pushed Lake Mead to record lows in 2022, the nation’s largest reservoir began exposing artifacts, boats and human remains along its receding shoreline. In southern Nevada, that reality came into sharper focus on May 7, 2022, when a visitor near Callville Bay picked up what turned out to be a human jawbone while exploring land that had recently emerged from the water. The discovery quickly became part of a broader series of findings tied to the lake’s rapidly shrinking shoreline.

A discovery on newly exposed shoreline

The remains were found at Lake Mead National Recreation Area near Callville Bay, on the Nevada side of the reservoir east of Las Vegas. According to The Associated Press, Lindsey Melvin said she and her sister were “playing with rocks” on a newly exposed sandbar on Saturday, May 7, 2022, when they first thought they had found the remains of a bighorn sheep before realizing it appeared to be a human jawbone. Park rangers were notified, and the National Park Service began investigating the site.

The jawbone discovery came less than a week after another high-profile find at Lake Mead. On May 1, 2022, a body was found inside a barrel along the lake’s newly exposed shoreline, and investigators said items found with that body suggested the death may have occurred in the 1970s or 1980s, according to reporting by the AP. The May 7 discovery therefore marked at least the second set of human remains publicly reported at the reservoir that month.

By later in 2022, the AP reported that at least six discoveries of human remains had been made at Lake Mead since early May. Officials said the falling shoreline made additional finds more likely as more lakebed became accessible to visitors and search crews.

What is confirmed is that the May 7 discovery happened in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which spans Nevada and Arizona, and that the jawbone was found near Callville Bay in Clark County’s orbit. The Clark County coroner’s office was involved in identifying remains found at the lake, according to AP coverage, and the National Park Service handled the immediate law-enforcement and scene response within the recreation area.

What was not known at the time was the identity of the person whose jawbone was found, how long the remains had been there, and whether the bones were connected to any other remains later discovered nearby. Reporting in August 2022 indicated that some bones found at the lake in separate incidents might have come from the same individual, underscoring how incomplete the public record still was as the shoreline continued to change.

The company-style certainty often expected in other breaking stories did not apply here because this was a law-enforcement and coroner matter unfolding across multiple dates and locations. Authorities did not release a comprehensive public list tying each set of remains to a confirmed identity during the early months of the discoveries.

The broader cause was Lake Mead’s extreme decline during a prolonged Western drought and decades of heavy demand on the Colorado River system. Associated Press reporting at the time described the reservoir as having shrunk to a record low, driven by a punishing drought and water demand from roughly 40 million people in seven states. That drop exposed shoreline that had been underwater for years or decades.

The low-water conditions were visible well beyond the specific discovery site. AP photo reporting from June 2022 documented boats stranded on dry ground and large stretches of cracked earth around the reservoir near Boulder City, while other coverage noted marina closures and water infrastructure newly visible above the surface. Each development reinforced how sharply the reservoir had receded.

For residents and visitors in southern Nevada, the practical meaning was straightforward: more previously submerged areas were becoming accessible, and officials expected more discoveries were possible as water levels remained low. The National Park Service continued managing public access and investigations, while the Lake Mead findings became an unusually stark measure of the reservoir’s changing conditions and the long-running stress on the Colorado River basin.
