That concern has returned to the Salton Sea region, where a rapid series of earthquakes struck in a seismically active corridor tied to the southern end of the San Andreas system. The recent activity did not produce a major disaster, but it again focused attention on the part of California many researchers describe as the state’s most consequential fault zone.
A swarm near one of California’s most watched fault systems
The latest widely documented burst of activity in the region included a magnitude 4.7 earthquake near Brawley on May 10, 2026, with the U.S. Geological Survey identifying it as part of a temporary seismic swarm and warning that additional earthquakes were expected. USGS event data placed the quake about 3 kilometers west-southwest of Brawley, in the Imperial Valley near the Salton Sea and the Brawley Seismic Zone.
That matters because the Brawley Seismic Zone links the northern Imperial Fault system with the southern end of the San Andreas Fault.
